UEFA Europa League 2026/27: league phase, Algerians to follow and betting
The Europa League is Europe's second club competition, behind the Champions League ⚽. Run by UEFA, it reaches its 56th season in 2026/27, the 18th under this name after the UEFA Cup years. It is also the third edition played in the new format, where a single league table replaces the old groups.
League phase: 36 clubs, one table
All 36 clubs share one table. Each plays eight games, four at home and four away, against eight different opponents: two drawn from each of the four pots, one at home and one away. Clubs from the same country do not meet, and nobody faces more than two teams from one country. That makes 144 games in all, 18 per matchday. The draw was made in Monaco on 28 August 2026.

The top eight of the league phase go straight into the round of 16. Clubs finishing between 9th and 24th play two-legged play-offs, and the bottom twelve are out. From matchday 2 onwards, every game up to the semi-finals is played on a Thursday evening. The final is the exception: it falls on a Wednesday, at the home of Eintracht Frankfurt, a two-time winner of the competition, in a stadium that hosted games at the 1974 and 2006 World Cups and at Euro 1988 and Euro 2024.
Algerians in the Europa League
The competition is for European clubs, but several Algeria internationals play for teams in it. Ibrahim Maza is at Bayer Leverkusen, Amine Gouiri and Himad Abdelli at Olympique de Marseille, and Adem Zorgane at Union Saint-Gilloise. Maza and Gouiri were both in Algeria's squad for the 2026 World Cup, and Abdelli made his Algeria debut on 18 June 2023.
Some league-phase fixtures bring these clubs together. On 5 November 2026, matchday 4, Leverkusen host Marseille: Maza's club against the club of Gouiri and Abdelli. On 10 December, Olympique Lyonnais welcome Union Saint-Gilloise, Zorgane's club. On 28 January 2027, the final matchday, Lyon host Leverkusen.
The 2026/27 field
The 36 clubs come from 22 countries. France has three: Lyon, fourth in Ligue 1 and then beaten in the Champions League play-off, Marseille, fifth, and Rennes, sixth. England also has three, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Sunderland. Italy sends Milan and Juventus, Spain Real Sociedad and Celta, Germany Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, and Portugal Benfica and Torreense.
Two clubs are playing in Europe for the first time: Bournemouth and Torreense. Torreense, a second-division side, qualified by winning the Portuguese Cup against Sporting after extra time. Former winners in the field include Juventus (1976/77, 1989/90 and 1992/93), Anderlecht (1982/83) and Bayer Leverkusen (1987/88), while Marseille have played in three finals.

Aston Villa, the last winners
The 2026 final was played on 20 May in Istanbul, at Beşiktaş Park: Aston Villa beat SC Freiburg 3:0 with goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía, named man of the match, and Morgan Rogers. On the way, Villa overturned a first-leg defeat by Nottingham Forest, 0:1 then 4:0, while Freiburg got past Braga 4:3 on aggregate. It was the English club's first European trophy since the 1982 European Cup, 44 years earlier, and its first trophy of any kind in 30 years. Their coach Unai Emery became the first to win the competition with three different clubs, after Sevilla, three times, and Villarreal, for five titles in all.
